DVD and Cover

The case for my DVD is made from black card and the design on the front cover is taken from the animated sequences in the documentary project.

DVD Concept

For my DVD and case i want to keep a similar aesthetic to my previous three projects, the one constant in them is that I have removed the original colour from all three. In one of them the original footage is black and white, in another I made the footage sepia toned and for the final video I made it black and white to match the subject matter.

My case and menu design is going to make use of a strong black and white contrast fitting with the previous projects.

Editing in After Effects

In After Effects I created my intro sequence, the end credits and a couple of small animations that were inspired by the music video shown in the lecture that made use of still frame images but had a dynamic 3D element to it.

Editing in Avid

In Avid Media Composer I worked at getting the segments of interview that had valid content that I wanted to use to reinforce my point. The difficult part was keeping the length to under five minutes. I also wanted to try and alternate between my two interviewees instead of having one of them talk continuously. I had to trim parts of their sentences to reduce time and remove stutters or errors.

Capturing

I captured my video off the tape today. I first logged them under separate interviews and then under segments of conversation that I thought that I could use.

Filming continued

I went and got permission from the cafe "Midnight Espresso" to do some filming on their property showing coffee being made. These shots can be played while the interviews talk over the top to give the documentary some action shots to break up the fairly static feel of the interviews.

Filming the interviews

The Interviewees were baristas from different coffee shops near the law campus of Victoria university. I asked them a set of questions and also got them to incorporate the questions that I had asked into their answers so that I could create a clean narrative for the documentary without switching from interviewer to interviewee.

Planning

For my video I wanted to give it a black and white look that will fit with the subject matter.

Concept

The theme for my video is student coffee addiction but I am looking at it

from the point of view from the baristas making and serving the

beverages. I want to explore the opinions of the people who have to put

up with the legions of students buying coffee from them every day. Can

they identify a customer that is a student as opposed to a non-student? Do

they get sick and tired of serving the same students day in and day out?

Do the students that they serve buy their coffee at a specific time of the

day or even at a certain time in the year?

I want to explore the ideas that there is an equal number of students

buying coffee as there are non-students and that they only get their coffee

to take away rather than have it at a cafĂ© because of the hectic pace of

the student lifestyle. These trends are what I want to look into for the

documentary. I especially want to talk about how the coffee drinking habits

of students differ from everyone else.

I want to see if there is any identifiable difference between a student

coffee drinker compared to a non-student as viewed by the barista serving

them.

The webpage

I have titled my movie "Otari Safari" because of the documentary footage style that it has with the brown tone.

This is the link for the website:

After Effects editing

In Adobe After Effects I wanted to make my footage appear as though it was from an old exploration documentary. To do this I used a brown tone over the top of the clip giving it an aged appearance. In a couple of sections where I walked with the camera I wanted to overlay on a semi-transparent layer above these footage of the bush to the sides of the path as I walk past. This way I show more information about the site in less time of film.

Avid sound editing

The sound for my footage had a lot of background noise of cars driving past while I was near the entrance to Otari and a chainsaw was being used by staff to trim branches as well. When I got deep into Otari I managed to find some beautiful bird calls that I edited over the top of earlier footage where the sound was poor.

Avid editing

After watching through my footage I put together the clips filmed from outside Otari and looking down over the bush above a raised walkway as establishing shots to set the scene. Inside Otari itself I have a few scenes of panning over bush and shrubbery as well as scenes of birds.

Capturing footage into Avid

Today I spent my morning logging segments of my footage and then capturing it into Avid media composer so that it could be edited later.

Filming

I rented out a video camera from the store at the faculty of architecture and design this morning and started filming around 1:00 to take advantage of the high position of the sun which provided a great effect as it streamed through the leaves of the canopy. I managed to get through 15 minutes of filming before the battery for the camera ran out but thankfully my parents house was only 5 minutes away from my site so I managed to get back to shooting after only a short interval. I got around 30 minutes of footage from my afternoon at otari bush.

Waiting

I am merely waiting for an ideal day to do my filming on. I want it to be very sunny so that the rays stream through the leaves and branches above the path in Otari bush to provide some dramatic lighting to the scene.

New Media

New media encompasses everything that is now developed to be used by a computer or is a product of computer editing. Commonly the idea of new media is limitede to the viewing and storing of the media rather than a tool for creating it. This new revolution is just starting and already has had an affect on cultures and older material in a physical format is already being converted so that it can stored, transferred and edited digitally.

Filming practice

For our 211 tutorial session we were given the opportunity to practice using the video cameras that we will be using to do our footage with. Our task was to take at least one variation of a long shot, mid shot, close-up and extreme close-up and everyone in the group was expected to have a go at filming and familiarize themselves with the camera.

Starting project two

I located my site today. It is called Otari bush and is located in the suburb of Wilton. To accompany this site I am going to explore the idea of exploration and discovery. The site gives ample opportunity to show this idea with long and winding paths overhung by large native trees.

Review

After the review session I found out that the credits from the previous post were supposed to be incorporated into either the video or the website. I was unaware of this fact because we were not provided with the full submission requirements only a brief outline of what to hand-in.

The website

For the website I decided to use the second iteration of my clips since it is far more serious in its tone. To display this in the background I created an image of a cross in black and had it decay at the edges by using a brush on it. Around it I had black brush splatters at the edge of the screen to give it a very gritty feel.

The third iteration

For the third remix video clip I used the audio from the beginning of a religious programme as Hitler and another German officer walk up a set of steps. For the rest of the clip the audio is comprised of religious advertisements with video clips of Hitler speeches over the top to make it appear as though he is selling these services.

Second iteration

For the second video remix I have taken a far more serious tone with the editing of the video. The opening sequence is from the "Holy Terror" documentary talking about how the planet earth is dying of sin. The footage playing over the top of it is from a nazi concntration camp. The rest of the video has members of the nazi party with the sound over the top from christian groups. The final scene comes across as quite philosophical with an atomic blast going off with someone saying "some call it free will, God calls it murder."

The first iteration

The first iteration of my remix video has the narrative driven by the audio clippings I made from the documentary "Holy Terror" with images of the Nazi party and Adolf Hitler to back it up. The sound bytes go over the top of Adolf Hitler speeches making it apear as though he is saying it. The intro is overlayed by the "our father" prayer while members of the nai party gather, giving the impression that they are singing it.

Learning avid

I familiarized myself with Avid today before doing my proper videos in an attempt to be fully prepared by the time that I start editing my videos in it. The tutorials involved importing video, mixing different video with different audio in the background and trimming the video.

I found Avid quite easy to use once you pick up the basics of overwriting or splicing-in different media. The only point of frustration was importing source video and the amount of time it sucked up. To counter this obstacle I cut out all the segments of footage I wished to use in Quicktime and saved them as separate videos which could be imported quickly.

Story-boarding and developing concept

This is the storyboard for the first video. The beginning of the clip is composed of the "Our Father" prayer with images of nazi troops marching and then cuts to speeches made by Adolf Hitler accompanied by audio snippets from the "Holy Terror" documentary.
For the second storyboard a montage of clips from a documentary about nazi concentration camps will be shown with an audio track about sin taken from "Holy Terror." The second half of this remix will be composed of an atomic blast going off with an adorning voiceover talking about god and murder.

The third of the clips is going to have a voiceover going the whole way through it taken from religious advertising and infomercials. The accompanying video will display Adolf Hitler speeches and show him selling these religious products.

Watching the videos

After watching through the "Holy Terror" documentary I got the idea to use the audio from the documentary and then adding footage from world war ii over the top. Specifically footage of Hitler and the Nazi party, by doing this I am establishing a link between the radical christian movement and the actions of the Nazi party.

This page from my workbook shows the times for images that I want layered over the top of the audio from "Holy Terror."

Coming up with a concept

When I first started trawling through archive.org I did not have any idea of what my remix was going to be about. One of the categories on the site was titled "news and public affairs," through that link I found a collection of documentaries called the Alternative View. The list of documentary titles gave me a lot of options for the idea I wanted put across through the video. "Holy Terror" was the title of the documentary I decided to use for my content. It is about extremist christian groups and the threat they pose to society.

These pages taken from my work book show the times of key quotes from the "Holy Terror" documentary that I believe would be valuable to my remix.

Remixing

The concept of remixing has been around for years but most notably came to prominance during the time of ancient Rome incorporating thae ideas of Ancient Greece. Remixing involves taking something created by somebody else and altering it suit your particular vision. This is most recognisable in the music industry where the advent of computers has allowed artists to easily sample a sound from another artists song.

The relevance of the aticle "Remix and Remixability" by Lev Manovich to project one is that he predicts the direction in which technology and the use of the internet is heading. He believes that all content is remixable from the internet and that it is becoming a trend for creators to provide access to the inner workings of their projects for others to expand upon. the affect this has on project one is the sheer amount of copywrite free content available for redistribution in our own vision.
